Factory audit points, certification red flags and sample evaluation steps that separate real manufacturers from trading companies.
Sourcing power tools at scale starts with one question: are you talking to a factory or a middleman? A real manufacturer can walk you through its motor winding line, stator/rotor QC records and assembly stations on a live video call within a day. A trading company will stall, reschedule or send stock footage.
Ask for the business license and check the registered scope includes manufacturing. Cross-check the factory address on the license against the address on the CE Declaration of Conformity. Mismatches are the single most common red flag we see in failed sourcing projects.
On certifications: CE (EMC + LVD + Machinery) and RoHS are baseline for the EU; UKCA for Britain; ETL/UL matter for North America. Insist on test reports issued to the factory's own name — reports 'borrowed' from another factory will not survive a customs spot check.
Sample evaluation should be structural, not cosmetic. Run the tool under load for 30 minutes, measure temperature rise at the motor housing, and strip one unit down: look at copper winding gauge, bearing brands and switch cycle ratings. Cheap switches are the #1 field-failure cause.
Finally, agree the QC plan in writing before the deposit: AQL 2.5 for critical defects, per-batch function testing ratio, and third-party inspection rights. A supplier who resists independent inspection is telling you everything you need to know.
