How to Cut Sea Freight Costs on Hardware & Tool Imports
Carton engineering, density optimization and consolidation tactics that took 18% off our buyers' landed costs last year.
Freight is the invisible line item that decides whether your landed cost beats local distributors. Three levers matter most for hardware: density, consolidation and Incoterm choice.
Density first. Power tool kits ship in blow-molded cases by default — switching to double-wall cartons with molded pulp inserts cuts volume 22% with zero damage-rate increase in our drop tests. For fasteners, moving from 25kg cartons to 1-ton bulk bags on pallets lifts container utilization from 61% to 78%.
Consolidation: if you buy drills from us and abrasives from another Shandong factory, ask both to deliver to one CFS warehouse and ship a single FCL. One customs entry, one B/L, one delivery — typical saving is $800–1,400 per 40HQ versus two LCL shipments.
Incoterms: FOB gives you carrier control and rate-shopping power; CIF is convenient but the freight margin is baked into the price. For repeat buyers we recommend FOB + your own freight forwarder after the second order.
Send us your SKU mix and destination port — we'll run a free load plan and tell you exactly how many units fit a 20GP vs 40HQ before you commit.
Send your requirements — FOB/CIF quote within 24 hours.
